Barcelona Cathedral incorporates augmented reality thanks to the GVAM system.
Barcelona Cathedral has inaugurated a new and innovative visitor experience called “La Talaia de Barcelona”, which uses augmented reality to offer a unique view of the city from the rooftops of the iconic temple. This immersive experience allows users to explore the Catalan capital in a completely different and enriching way.
Using an electronic device and an intuitive app, visitors can discover 360-degree views of Barcelona’s main points of interest from one of the best panoramic viewpoints in the city. The app provides information on 45 iconic locations, organized into three categories: buildings and monuments, religious heritage, and natural spaces. Among the highlights visitors can explore are the Sagrada Família, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, Park Güell, Camp Nou, and the Torre Glòries, among others. On clear days, the app even allows users to see the Llobregat Coast, the Baix Maresme Coast, and—if lucky—the island of Mallorca on the horizon.
One of the most outstanding features of this experience is the use of augmented reality technology developed by GVAM. This technology overlays digital information onto the real-world landscape seen from the Cathedral’s rooftops, enabling an interactive and highly personalized experience. Users can select the points of interest they wish to explore and access detailed information about their history, architecture, and cultural significance.

The app is available in seven languages—Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, and Korean—making it accessible to an international audience. This new offering adds to other technological initiatives that Barcelona Cathedral has introduced in recent years, such as the interactive audio guide with visual and sound content (launched in 2018) and the 360º virtual reality experience using VR headsets (introduced in 2023). With the restoration and recent full opening of the Cathedral’s rooftops, this new experience complements and enriches visits, allowing for a deeper understanding of the city and its historical and cultural surroundings.
Moreover, “La Talaia de Barcelona” comes at no additional cost—it is included in the rooftop access ticket, making the experience even more accessible. Through this innovative initiative, the Cathedral continues to reaffirm its commitment to technological innovation and cultural outreach, using technology to bring heritage closer to both locals and visitors from around the world. The new app invites users to discover Barcelona from a renewed perspective, blending the best of history and technology into an unforgettable tour.
